Dr. Mercer holds a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington (1987). She is a Board Certified Homeopath and has been in private practice in Seattle's Roosevelt district for over 25 years. Since 1999, she has served as Adjunct Faculty at Bastyr University, where she supervises patient care and teaches clinical homeopathy to 3rd and 4th year naturopathic students. She is a past clinical faculty member at the Seattle School of Homeopathy in Edmonds, Washington.

JOURNEY TO CURRENT ROLE AS PHYSICIAN AND HOMEOPATH

My first discipline and passion in the early years of my life was ballet. Ballet led me to modern and improvisational dance and sustained my focus until my early 20s. Dancing led to to massage therapy, which in turn led me to Naturopathic Medicine. I graduated from Bastyr University in 1987 and have been in private practice in the Roosevelt district for over two decades.

Early on, guided by something stronger than a conscious decision, I began a serious study of Homeopathic medicine. Louis Klein, FS Hom who is a leader in the homeopathic profession and an exceptional practitioner was my earliest inspiration and mentor. In this deep and profound system of healing I found my focus within Naturopathic Medicine.

In 1999 a colleague taking a sabbatical invited me to fill in as supervisor of clinical homeopathy at the Bastyr Center of Natural Health. What was intended to be one quarter turned into 15 years. Teaching and mentoring aspiring homeopaths became another facet of my work. Now I'm treating patients and preparing the next generation of ND Homeopaths. Both are deeply gratifying.

VOLUNTEER/COMMUNITY SERVICE

I began volunteering with the Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign (AHAC) about ten years ago. I started at tent city and then for five years spent one Sunday per month at Angeline’s, a homeless women’s drop-in shelter in Belltown.

Seven years ago I spent a month in rural Kenya working at the TORU Health Centre, a Homeopathic Clinic in the Manyanga and Kambi-Mawe villages. Patients often walked miles or hours to get to us and wait under a thatched roof to be seen. Most everyone had malaria and/or hookworm. We also travelled by bus to very remote one-day ‘pop up’ clinics. When we arrived, people were waiting in the shade.
